sport and exercise medicine

Tennis Player Sport and Exercise Medicine (SEM) was recognized as a Speciality in its own right in 2005 but for many years before that doctors have helped athletes from all sports and all ages and abilities to return to physical activity with tailored treatment after careful diagnosis when they have sustained an injury of any sort. SEM physicians understand the importance of physical activity for health and well being and will explore all barriers to participation in it with their patients. This might include equipment, training schedules, nutrition or concurrent illness. Often the problem is overuse and over training and this can lead to tendon strain in particular. Treatment can be difficult and prolonged but new basic science evidence is leading us towards better treatment programmes giving quicker and better results. SEM practitioners make every effort to make a diagnosis using further investigations like imaging where needed. They use a wide variety of treatment options to resolve a problem.
