osteopathy

Osteopathy is a system of diagnosis and treatment of mainly musculoskeletal complaints first developed by Andrew Taylor Still in the USA in the 1870’s. Osteopaths use very good palpation skills to examine and treat the whole patient but focusing on the nervous system, soft tissues and skeleton. They are concerned with problems of structure and function rather than disease. This leads to a full and detailed assessment of the whole person wherever possible. Osteopaths expect the human body to be capable of healing itself of many problems, with a bit of help. The main focus is on spinal problems but arms and legs are assessed and treated as well.Since 2000,Osteopathy has been a recognised profession by statute with regulation by the General Osteopathic Council. For the general public this means significant quality assurance and for Osteopaths it means achieving and maintaining set standards. The new profession is being further underpinned by an increasing evidence base of effectiveness, notably acknowledged in the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) guidelines for treatment of Low Back Pain in 2009.
