I can assess and manage a wide variety of musculo-skeletal problems and sports injuries which might include foot pain, ankle sprains, calf sprains, knee sprains, pelvis sprains, low back pain, chest wall pain or neck pain. Trapped nerves can certainly be assessed and may be treated. Musculo-skeletal problems often have several causes accumulated over time. This is why I take a very detailed history going back over past and current injury and trauma history, exercise and sports participation and work and home activity. Occasionally X rays and blood tests and other investigations are needed and these are arranged in liaison with your general practitioner. My treatment plan is usually around manual therapy and an appropriate home exercise programme. Occasionally steroid injections can be indicated and I can do this if needed.

Tendons and blood supply. Why do we develop tendon problems? Some tendons give more trouble at places where their blood supply is not so good. This may be because of the effect of heat. When we exercise part of the energy of muscle action is converted to heat and if the temperature rises about 40°C then proteins of tendons can be damaged which could set up the problems of tendonopathy. If the tendon is regularly trained with increased load then the blood supply has a chance to adapt so that heat can be dissipated without this negative effect; one of the functions of our blood supply is to transfer heat.

General Practitioners, Physiotherapists and other Health Care providers can refer by telephoning, emailing or writing a letter of referral to me. A GP referral is sometimes a requirement for some Private Health Insurance providers. In either case I will always seek to send a letter summarising my findings and recommendations to the GP and referring professional, with your consent.

First Aid advice

Within about 3 days (that is, for an acute injury) of a sprain or strain happening it's often helpful to apply cold to the injured area, being careful not to damage the overlying skin. Wrap up the ice pack or frozen peas with a towel after allowing them to thaw a little, before putting them on the skin surface. Feel the cold deep inside for about 10 minutes. You can repeat this 3 times a day if practicable.

For aches and pains of longer duration, termed chronic, often due to over-use in sport or at home or at work, then heat is often more useful. Use a warm water bottle, not a hot one, and take care of the skin as before. Warm baths can be good for aching, stiff joints and muscles.
